Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry ~ Laughing Gas

Since the 1800s, dentists have been using nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas.

When administered in conjunction with Novocain (which numbs the area of treatment), nitrous oxide can be an effective form of sedation.

You inhale the gas through a scented nosepiece, and typically begin to feel the effects almost immediately. Although you’ll feel relaxed (and maybe giggly), you’re conscious the entire time.

Laughing gas is the most mild form of sedation dentistry, taking the edge off to allow you to undergo treatment. Not many general dentists offer laughing gas, but most sedation dentists do.
